This course is an introduction to the beautiful theory of Riemannian Geometry, a subject with no lack of interesting examples. Differential geometry is a discipline of mathematics that uses tools from differential calculus and linear algebra to study geometric properties of one-dimensional curves, two-dimensional surfaces, and high-dimensional generalizations thereof that go under the name smooth manifolds. Each of these units corresponds roughly to a day or two of Differential geometry is a vast subject. A comprehensive introduction would require prerequisites in several related subjects, and would take at least two or three semesters of courses. In this elementary introductory course we develop much of the language and many of the basic concepts of differential geometry in the simpler context of curves and surfaces in ordinary 3 dimensional Euclidean Lecture notes for a two-semester course on Differential Geometry. Topics covered include: smooth manifolds, vector bundles, differential forms, connections, Riemannian geometry. These course notes are intended for students of all TU/e departments that wish to learn the basics of tensor calculus and differential geometry. Prerequisites are linear algebra and vector calculus at an introductory level.
